This OR That?

As we're gearing up for the big move, we know there are a few important purchases that need to be made right away. These include a washer & dryer, a fridge, and new couches/a sectional for the great room. We spent all day Saturday checking out our options, and I literally mean ALL day - 13 stores total. We're still going back and forth on the details - so I thought I'd throw it out there for some feedback.

Washer & Dryer
Old school style with the agitator or the newer front load HE machines?
One potential problem: our laundry room is a walk through (from
garage to kitchen) and the front load machines tend to stick out 4-5" further, making for a tight fit.

Fridge/Freezer
Side by Side or French Doors with the freezer on the bottom?
Must have the ice/water feature in the door. Also, we like the stainless look but not the cleaning of fingerprints, so the 'smudge-proof' options such as Satina, clean steel, and titanium finishes, intrigue us. Our other appliances are black at the moment.

New co
uch for the great room
Two couches or a sectional? Leather or fabric? (We really like brown leather).
Our only requirements: must recline, be comfortable, stylish, and offer plenty of seating. Maybe we'll throw a big chair into the mix too...

Paint
The paint on the walls is fresh, but happens to be a true white. We're thinking about re-painting the interior before moving in. A neutral color perhaps - any suggestions on choosing a color and finish (satin/eggshell, semi-gloss, gloss)? Would you paint the ceilings also? Would you paint different colors in different rooms or bring color in with accessories?

definitely satin/eggshell in rooms. Some people like semigloss (easier to wash)etc. but satin seems to look nice without the shine from semi-gloss and you can wash it too.

I've never liked leather....just not comfy to me...always makes me cold...but you live in Vegas!

Excited to see the house,

Leather is good. But reclining + stylish is a tough combination. Maybe a sectional + big ottoman/cocktail table + accent chair. Paint store people (not necessarily home depot) can give you tips on what gloss. I do know that for doors and trim you want high gloss.

Yes, I hear eggshell on walls is what's popular now (it's a softer feel than having gloss). But eggshell is wicked hard to clean, so the solution I heard for that (on HGTV, which I was addicted to) is use an eggshell ENAMEL instead of latex. You'll have to be a LOT more careful painting, though! :)

I love the couch choice. I personally would choose separate pieces instead of a sectional. Even though they're making a comeback, they seem kinda 80's to me & like they might fade out again. They also feel incredibly informal to me, and I personally prefer furniture that I could have "fancier" company over on & they wouldn't sink into the furniture. Unless you already have a fancier sitting room for that kind of purpose; then just get big and squishy and comfy with the great room furniture!

I love that style of fridge. I think it'd be the ultimate in convenience. As for the finish, I personally like simplicity, so I'd probably pick black to match everything else. But your kitchen is HUGE, so maybe if it stands on it's own, far from the others, having stainless could work. Definitely invest in something smudgeproof! I never want stainless again after having it in our first house (it was such a pain to keep looking decent).

Washer and dryer, I'd probably pick traditional, based on your size issue. If the idea of them sticking out is already bothering you, it'll probably be amplified once they're in & you start hitting your hips on it every time you walk past.

Those are just my opinions, though, if it were my house! :) Good luck with the decision making!

Go with leather couches! Soooo easy to clean, especially with kids! Spit up, food, juice, etc, wipes right off! My brother-in-law's kids spread chocolate frosting all over their fabric couch two or three years ago and you can STILL see it! We have two super cushy leather recliner couches from Steinhafels: one black sectional for our family room and a brown sofa/loveseat set for our living room. We love both.
We have egg shell walls. I like it; a little sheen but not too glossy! More gloss should stick to the bathrooms. Mr. Clean magic erasers do wonders on all wall surfaces ;)
It is so much fun to pick out new stuff! Good luck with your choices!
